This little homage to Southern living is perfect for anyone wishing to revisit their roots in the deep South or those wanting to get a peek into what "Southern Hospitality" really means. B.S. Johnson not only does a good job in her collection of essays of conveying the warmth of the culture she grew up in, but does so in a way that will leave you hankering for a huge glass of sweet tea. So kick your feet up, sit a spell, and check it out!
I received this book in the mail and my first thought how can you put so much in a little book. Then I started reading it and found myself laughing and smiling. I started to reminisce about my childhood.I am not a southerner, I am from a small town in Northern Michigan. I could relate though to some of the stories told in this book of my time there. We had bonfires, took our trucks to the mud pits and made a party of it. It was a small town where you knew every one or were related.Everyone helped everyone. It was nice to have some of those memories come back. I have long since left that town and had forgotten some of its treasures.
I also learned a lot of what I did not know of the South. That even though I could relate to some as a Northerner, I was learning what it was that truly has made the south so special.
I will not give any spoilers, but will say this. A lot is packed into this little book that makes it a must read over and over. It is not a book just for the Southerners, but stories that make you feel good, laugh and smile no matter where you are from.
I recommend this Author and book. I look forward to reading more from her. Certainly expect to read this one over and over.
The title is quoted from the text of this short, well-written, well edited, informative book about Southern culture. It is written in a folksy style and made me laugh throughout. The text comes across as genuine, not imitation Southern dialect written by a non-native. It is not a story, so don't expect a story line. What it is is a quick tour of various aspects of Southern culture that differentiate it from the rest of the continent. The tour includes such savory elements as multiple dogs and cats, jumping in the mud and finding a spouse, getting drunk and acting ridiculous, guns, trucks, saying "Hey y'all watch this!" and then doing something crazy. Add to that the importance of trailers and Camaros, Southern hospitality, mason jars, a quick lesson on dialectical variations among Southerners, the good ole boy philosophy, a long list of country sayings, and much more. Highly recommended.
Maters, Taters & Grits... real catchy title but was not like I expected it to be after reading synopsis. There is no story line and it is more like reading a dictionary. I was born and raised in the south and cannot recommend this book.
We will need to plan a vacation to come visit soon. I want to do a mud run, go to a rodeo,and enjoy sweet tea around a bon fire! Oh and visit stone mountain again!
It was a good read and it made me smile!

I got this book and read it. I gave B.S.Johnson five stars as she did a GREAT job with her first book. I recommend it as it explains some very true "southern" roots as well as her personal life.
